Business context

After creating a catalog of the best MOOCs out there dedicated to regular learners, Edflex wants to develop its B2B learning service to large and mid-sized companies. The mission is the develop a SaaS platform that would bring the best e-learning content to employees who are eager to develop their skills.

Edflex already faces a retention problem: there is a high bounce rate on the resource pages of the existing B2C platform. As learners started a MOOC, they were directed to the learning content creator’s site and they didn’t come back to mark their progress on Edflex.

The approach while building Edflex is to make the user engage with his learning path, and therefore improve the completion rate of a learning course.

  • Design a white-label website for large and mid-sized companies that want to deliver learning content to their employees.

  • Take ownership of the product's evolution by implementing regular ideation sessions with executives, the Operation Manager, and the Lead Developer.

  • Bring a more coherent structure and layout of certified courses along with quizzes.

  • Create a user dashboard showcasing key metrics about the user’s learning activity to improve retention.

  • Build an HR portal to monitor employees’ learning activity.

  • Design a white-label website for large and mid-sized companies that want to deliver learning content to their employees.

  • Take ownership of the product's evolution by implementing regular ideation sessions with executives, the Operation Manager, and the Lead Developer.

Audit

When I join the team, I start to run a UX audit to identify usability issues to make design improvements. I notice the user dashboard has to be improved by giving a better perspective about the user’s activity on the platform. Plus, the navigation inside a certified course is hierarchical and lacks a bird’s-eye view that highlights the path toward getting the certification.

Sketches

I display inspiration screens on the wall to discuss with my peers about the new layout we could adopt. I start sketching the main screens of the user dashboard to have a first perspective of its new information architecture. These first sketches are part of a reflexion process on how I could make the navigation simpler with a more intuitive top-to-bottom representation of a learning path.

I craft the user experience of a dashboard that would better monitor learning progress. I assume that a more data-driven experience of the learner’s activities would improve his retention. The gamification of the learning experience was something common on other competitive platforms. Along with my lead developer, we came up with a scoring system based on the certifications obtained and the resources completed.

Final Design

I conduct visual design research to start designing the user dashboard. I gather UI inspirations from other online learning platforms such as Degreed or Udemy and also took a close look at what designers shared on Dribbble or Behance. I constantly iterate on my high-fidelity designs in Sketch based on the feedback of developers, product managers, and executives.
